Finding Great Hong Kong Tailors

August 5th, 2014

If you’re a powerful executive with business dealings around the world, then you may find yourself in need of Hong Kong tailors at one point or another. Other than overcoming a communication barrier, doing so is no different than it is at home.

You’ll be surprised to find out, though, that most Hong Kong tailors speak fluent English. Most of them aren’t even from Hong Kong. They have simply set up shop in the city because it is a bustling metropolis that serves as the center of business for much of the Eastern world.

Just like New York City, there are many different Hong Kong Tailors, and choosing the one that’s best for you can prove challenging, frustrating and difficult.

How to Evaluate Hong Kong Tailors

First, find a tailor you can communicate with. Most of the upscale tailors providing truly bespoke services will have an interpreter available at no additional cost, so you can still work with one that doesn’t speak English.

It is best, though, that you find a tailor you can personally communicate with. The process of tailoring a bespoke suit is a collaborative one, and being able to work closely with your tailor means you’ll end up with a better finished product. Having an interpreter in the mix can result in miscommunications, which means you may end up with something you’re not pleased to own.

After you’ve found tailor that you can communicate with, you should try to find out if the two of you will get along. Of course, there may be times when you need to work with a tailor who isn’t likely to become your best friend, but for your regular tailoring needs, you want to make sure that you have plenty of rapport.

You see, as Hong Kong tailors get to know their customers, they become better able to make suggestions and recommendations that will help them look their best. If your relationship with your tailor isn’t absolutely phenomenal, then you may end up with a suit that fits well but fails to enhance your best features.

Worse yet, you may end up with a suit that technically matches your specifications, but doesn’t really meet your expectations. This means you’ll be end up with a suit that you won’t really wear after spending thousands of dollars.

What to Expect from Hong Kong Tailors

The working environment is rather different in Hong Kong than it is in the United States. You can expect the same level of customer service and dedication from tailors in this region, but the overall process will be a bit different.

Here, the emphasis will be on efficiency. This doesn’t mean that Hong Kong tailors don’t take the time to get to know their customers and have some fun with them while taking measurements or making alterations. It simply means that once your measurements are made (either for the initial pattern or potential alterations) you should expect a relatively fast turnaround.

Of course, different tailors have different turnaround times. Take the time to explain your expectations to your tailor, as well as learning how quickly he usually finishes a suit. This will allow you to plan your orders efficiently. The last thing you want is to rush into your tailor’s office needing a suit completely finished in three weeks. It’s possible, but rarely will the suit turn out as well fitting as it otherwise could have.

As you can see, working with Hong Kong Tailors isn’t drastically different than working with those who own shops in your own back yards. Taking the time to find the best tailor is important if you want to look your best.
