If you’re tired of off-the-rack clothing, but don’t feel you’re able to afford a truly bespoke option, made to measure may be what you’re looking for. You’ll still have many of the benefits of a truly bespoke option, like picking your fabrics and having a garment that fits incredibly well, but it won’t be quite to the standards of bespoke connoisseurs.

For the average guy there will be no discernible difference. The true fans of completely custom tailored clothing claim that the difference is in the details. If you don’t know the difference between working button holes and hand stitched liners, then you’ll never notice the difference.

How Does Made to Measure Differ From Bespoke?

With a bespoke option, everything is completely customized. This includes that pattern from which your suit is tailored. It’s time consuming and expensive for the tailor to create a completely custom pattern, and it’s one of the biggest contributors to the cost of bespoke options.

Made to measure suits are identical to bespoke options with the exception of the custom pattern. Instead, your measurements are taken and your tailor will use patterns that most closely match them. After the suit is tailored, alterations will be used to make the suit fit better. The end result is a custom suit that looks far better than anything you could purchase at a department store at a fraction of the cost of similar bespoke suits.

What Does It Cost?

The cost of your made to measure garments will depend on a number of factors. These include the standard rates your chosen tailor charges, the fabrics used, and the style of your suit. In most cases you can have a made to measure suit tailored for anywhere between $800 and $1500. It’s rare to find a made to measure suit that costs much more than this, though. At higher price points people tend to prefer truly bespoke solutions.

With that being said, there are certain fabrics that you might choose that could cost your suit to cost significantly more. The style you choose could have the same effect, especially if it’s one that requires additional fabric.

The major trouble with made to measure suits and bespoke suits is the confusion that exists between the two. There are plenty of tailors that offer “bespoke” solutions, but then really only use made to measure techniques.

There have also been a number of articles and advertisements that declare one type of tailoring is being used, when in fact it is another. Don’t just think that these mistakes are being made by internet sites, either. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal mistakenly identified the bespoke tailoring of a prominent French tailor as being made to measure.

Take the information that you’ve learned in this article and use it to determine if you’re really being offered a bespoke solution or one that is made to measure. There’s no sense paying too much for what the tailor is offering. At the same time, if your tailor is referring to his bespoke options as made to measure, then it may indicate he’s somewhat inexperienced and incapable of providing the perfect suit.

Finding a Made to Measure Tailor

Like all things, trial and error seems to be the best way to find the perfect tailor. But, you can reduce the amount of error you’ll go through by asking your friends, family, and coworkers who they prefer. Then, use the internet to check on that tailor’s reputation.

Avoid a tailor with multiple bad reviews, and you’re likely to end up satisfied with your made to measure garments.
