Rent A Tuxedo Or Buy Custom Black Tie Garments?
July 23rd, 2014
The most challenging thing for the average man to discern is whether he should rent a tuxedo, or see a tailor about a custom black tie suit. While your immediately available funds will ultimately determine what you can choose, common sense dictates ordering a custom black tie garment.
Unfortunately, common sense isn’t so common, and most guys have no idea why ordering custom black tie clothing is the more affordable route. That’s why we’ve put together this short guide.
The Cost of Renting a Tuxedo
Renting a nice tuxedo can range from $120 a day to $500 or more. It’s unlikely that you’ll find yourself in a shop at the upper end of that price range, but if you live in a bigger city it’s very possible. Consider the cost of renting a tuxedo just 10 times over the course of your life – you’re looking at a total outlay of $1,200 to $5,000 dollars. That’s a lot of money!
The one benefit of renting a tuxedo over having a tailor provide custom black tie options is that you’ll always have something that fits, no matter how much weight you gain or lose. This is something that many men cite as their reason for preferring rentals – but it’s flawed logic, at best.
Look at your father, or the father’s of your closest friends. You’ll realize, almost right away, that they’re about the same size and weight as they were 20 years ago, with few exceptions. This is because most of us settle into a lifestyle in our late twenties or early thirties that doesn’t change much as we age. Because of this, we’ll usually finish putting on any weight (or getting into better shape) by the time we’re thirty five years old. So, renting a tuxedo just in case your body changes drastically in the next five years isn’t really as necessary as you may have thought.
The Cost of Custom Black Tie Clothing
Seeing your tailor for a custom tuxedo is far less expensive than you might realize – you can generally have a custom tuxedo tailored for $800 to $2,500, depending on the style, fabric, and level of tailoring you’re after. Of course, a bespoke tuxedo will cost more than a made-to-order tuxedo. So what’s the difference?
Those that are made-to-order use standard patterns that closely match your measurements, and then are tailored as necessary to perfect the fit. A bespoke tuxedo is made with a completely original pattern, which is entirely based on your measurements.
In the case of a bespoke tuxedo, the cost could extend to as much as $10,000 (or more), but it’s unlikely that you’ll need a tuxedo like that, especially if you’re reading this article. For most men, a made-toorder tuxedo, or even one bought at the local department store with alterations, will be an acceptable option.
Which Route Should You Take?
Consider how often you find yourself in a situation that calls for black tie clothing. If you only find yourself needing a tuxedo every five or ten years, then it makes more sense (financially) to rent yours. If, however, you find yourself needing one ever other year, every year, or more frequently than that, you’ll be throwing your money away each time you rent a tux.
Speak to your local tailor about your budget, preferred style, and what you like. He’ll help you figure out the best way to proceed with having your very own tuxedo tailored. Ultimately, you’ll find that you absolutely love the way you look and feel when wearing your custom black tie clothing, and that’s worth something all by itself.
