What Is The Definition Of Tailoring?

Tailors create clothes based on customers personal measurements, shapes and dimensions. Some tailors may specialise exclusively in women’s clothing, others may specialise in men’s clothing, and others may provide custom made garments for both males and females.

Tailoring is more of an art than a science, with a good eye for details needed, as well as a steady hand, creativity, and wide knowledge about clothing issues in general. Tailoring professionals not only make clothes, but they must also be able to advise customers on fashions trends and have an excellent understanding of different fabrics and textiles, patterns, different types of stitching and stitching methods and good communication and people skills. They also need to have top quality skills in sewing by hand and sewing by machine.

The typical tailoring process, and the procedure for creating a custom made item, involves several different stages. Firstly, the customer and tailor will generally have a discussion about the individual customer’s requirements, with the tailor advising on any aspects as necessary. A choice of fabric, colour and any other features will be made, and the customer will be measured up for their new clothing. Several different detailed measurements will be taken, to ensure an accurate fit that is completely proportioned for the individual’s frame and figure. Using these measurements, tailors will then create a new pattern with which to create the item, or will adjust a pre-existing template, depending on whether the service offered is bespoke tailoring or made to measure clothing. The item will then be made. There may be different tailors involved in the overall production, with some companies having teams of people, often with individual specialisations. For example, there may be a collar expert, a buttonhole expert, a cuffs expert and so on. It is common for the customer to try the item throughout its creation, to allow for any adjustments to be made and to ensure a perfect fit. When the garment is finished, it is ready to either be collected or shipped to the customer.

Many tailors will also do alterations on existing clothing items, such as altering hems to make garments longer or shorter, adjusting waist sizes, adding embellishments, or general clothing repairs.

Tailoring professionals may work from their own shop or as part of a team with other tailors, for clothes stores or for clothes manufacturers. Those tailors who work independently, running their own tailoring businesses, have increasingly sought out new ways to attract business and reach customers in the global marketplace. Online tailors are becoming increasingly common; it means that custom clothing can reach an even larger customer base and adds competition within the tailoring industry. Online tailors usually have a traditional shop or show room where they work from, as well as taking orders online. People from all over the world can commission high quality custom made garments from online tailors. The process for making clothes is the same, apart from the customer will required to submit their own measurements rather than being measured by an expert tailor. There are easy to follow instructions however, to assist customers in doing this, and a good variety of measurements are requested. Additionally, when using online tailors, the finished garment will be the first time when a customer tries the outfit.

Many people find using online tailors to be a very efficient and convenient way of accessing the services of skilled tailors; it means tailoring is available for all to obtain good quality clothing that fits well and is exactly to their requirements.
